Contaminated Fuel Removal

But do I really need a Fuel Drain?

With so many different opinions on whether it is safe to just top up the car we thought we would give you a definitive guide as to whether you should get it drained or not. Use the form below to find out:

Put Petrol in a Diesel Car and Drove it?

If you’ve been unfortunate enough to put petrol in a diesel car and then drove it you will no doubt have contaminated the fuel along the entirety of your fuel system.

The thing to remember in this case is that, as long as the vehicle isn’t driven too far, it is fixable – and usually will not require any fuel system components to be serviced or replaced. It is only in exceptional circumstances that driving on the wrong fuel will cause actual damage to the vehicle.

Some of these circumstances include:

  • Driving or running the car for an excessive time period.
  • The vehicle already having a pre-existing fault that could be aggravated by the contamination.
  • Really, really bad luck.

Our Services

A brief description of what we do

Whether it's petrol in a diesel car, or diesel in a petrol car, the main thing our customers want to know is "car it be fixed?" And the answer is most definitely Yes!. So what do we do to fix a car that is suffering from a wrong fuel problem?

Bear in mind that each scenario is different as every type of vehicle has it's own fuel system and a whole separate technology for accessing it. Nevertheless there are certain basic principles that all vehicles follow:

Petrol in Diesel

Diesel Engine Diagram
Basic diesel fuel system

The diagram above shows a typical diesel fuel system. If the vehicle is filled up with the wrong fuel - or has contaminated fuel - our first priority will be to empty out the fuel tank. This can be done in a number of ways - via the filler-neck, direct access to the tank via the sender unit, or through a feed line (for example, the fuel filter feed line).

If the vehicle has not been run on the contaminated fuel then there is no more to do other than fill the tank back up with the correct fuel. If, however, the vehicle has been driven or started we would then need to clean out the rest of the fuel system.

Getting rid of the contaminated fuel in the remainder of the system typically involves flushing the filter, pumps and injectors, purging all the contaminated fuel from the system, and re-priming everything with clean fuel. We also eliminate any air-locks and clear any ECU fault codes caused by the misfuelling.
